In the midst of the cliffs of the Serra de Montgrony, in a place full of history and legends and in the midst of an exceptional natural setting, stands the Sanctuary of Mongrony, accompanied by the Church of Sant Pere, where people have worshipped since the 9th century.
Sant Pere of Mongrony is a building that was established in 1138 and maintained parish functions until the 17th century, when they were transferred to the town of Gombrèn. From then, its only inhabitants were a custodian priest and some hermits. It has a single nave crowned by a Lombard apse, but in general it is a sombre building. The porch, situated on the south facade, was bult slightly later than the church. The interior has a tunnel vault reinforced by a main arch. The building is in a complex just above the Sanctuary of Santa Maria of Montgrony.
The Sanctuary of Nostra Senyora de Montgrony is an important centre of devotion to the Virgin Mary, located at the foot of Coma Ermada. The sanctuary is very near the Church of Sant Pere of Montgrony, which was the parish church until the 17th century. The first written news that exists of the sanctuary dates from 1400, when there was already a small construction dedicated to the Virgin Mary, excavated in the stone of the legendary approaches that leads to the Sant Pere complex. The hotel building was constructed in its vicinity in the 18th century in a first attempt to convert Montgrony into a great sanctuary. Between 1960 and 1970, water and light were brought up to the sanctuary and the road was converted into a forest path. The image of the Virgin Mary, called “la llet”, is a 13th century carving restored after a fire in 1892. Tradition has it that it was found in 804 by a shepherd and an ox. This image belongs then to those we know as “maresdedéus trobades”. In the vicinity of the sanctuary and, in fact, in the entire area, a multitude of legends have proliferated, especially the Count Arnau legend, which says that he was the defaulting contractor of the stone cut approaches that lead to the sanctuary and the complex.
