Cal Marquès Cultural Space

IMPORTANT NOTICE IMPORTANT NOTICE Cal Marquès Cultural Space

“The Casa Marqués is a 17th century Gothic building constructed on the orders of Pere Ribes, owner of a factory in Setcases. The town of Camprodon granted him the local noble title of Burgués Honrado. Later, the estate passed onto his grandson, the Marquis of Alfarràs, from where the name Cal Marqués comes.

Between 1639 and 1689, work was done to extend the building and the bridge from calle de la Trigona was built, connecting the house with the Marquis’ tribune, from which he could hear the mass held in Carme Church without needing to go to the temple.

In the late 18th century, during the Great War, French army troops occupied the town and the palace of the Casa Marqués was bombarded with stone bullets, set on fire and even sunk.

The building has a rectangular layout, structured internally into three bays perpendicular to the main facade, following the classical layout of the rural Catalan house.

The main door is shaped as a semi-circular arch made with large voussoirs that frame it. Above, we can see the sculpted coat of arms of the family of the Marquis of Alfarràs.

In the late 20th century and early 21st century, the Casa Marqués was renovated, with residential floors created in the upper part and commercial premises in the lower part, and a cultural space on the west side of the building, where temporary exhibitions and talks are held and where there is a permanent exhibition on the withdrawal. Even today we can still see the impact of a cannon bullet on the lintel of the first floor window of the main facade.

Museum centre that houses a multifunctIonal space to promote cultural activities in Camprodon.”
