Setcases is a picturesque town, where its houses, streets and stone alleyways are carefully restored and represent all the charm of a Pyrenees high mountain town.
The original Parish Church of Setcases was very possibly built during the 12th century. During the 15th century, this Romanesque temple was totally redone, certainly due to the defects caused by earthquakes. The jewel of the church is a magnificent Baroque altarpiece, an excellent work of Catalan Baroque, an era of overflowing ornamentation, possibly built in 1692 and situated in the presbytery presiding over the temple. Its composition is reminiscent of Renaissance lines. It is probably a work by different artists and dedicated, like the church, to Sant Miquel.
In 1983 the altarpiece and the images were carefully restored. It is important to note the different historic topics that are shown, such as the Virgin Mary on the upper vaulted niche and a little higher up the statue of Santo Galderic, the patron saint of farmers at that time. Or the figure of Sant Miquel Arcàngel. It was one of the few altarpieces that was saved during the civil war. It was restored in 1983.
